Community Q&A: Laundry Tips
Q: Laundry tips for husband who works in construction? I can’t get the sweat smell out of his clothes!
A: Here are some tips using enzyme detergents, oxygen boosters, baking soda and vinegar:
1. Enzyme Detergents - Enzyme detergents contain natural proteins that break down sweat, body oils, and other organic stains, which are the main causes of lingering odors in work clothes (check out Blueland Dirty Labs, Molly’s Suds, or Pronounce).
2. Oxygen Boosters - color-safe, non-toxic bleach alternatives. They break down tough stains and odors, brighten whites, and are safe for most fabrics except wool and silk.
3. Baking Soda - neutralizes odors and softens water, helping detergent work more effectively (add 1 cup of baking soda directly to the drum with your detergent).
4. Vinegar - kills odor-causing bacteria and helps dissolve mineral and detergent residues that trap smells (add 1 cup of vinegar to the fabric softener compartment so it’s released during the rinse cycle)
***Do not mix vinegar and baking soda in the same cycle—use them separately for best results.
Additional Tips: Turn clothes inside out, wash in smaller loads, air-dry clothes outside (sunlight can kill bacteria and neutralize odors), and skip the fabric softeners!

In The News:
Unilever Aquires Dr. Squatch for $1.5 billion - The low-tox community has smelt something fishy for some time now. Dr. Squatch has been slowly changing ingredients, adding things like “naturally derived fragrance” in nearly all of their products. It makes sense now that they were gearing up for a big sell-out.
Dr. Squatch was initially founded by Jack Haldrup as an alternative to conventional, skin sensitizing soaps which were harsh and irritating on his psoriasis-prone skin and auto immune disorder.
I personally wouldn’t recommend Dr Squatch as a low-tox product, or one that is safe for sensitive-skin individuals due to their addition of undisclosed fragrance across their product line. My question, however, would be to Jack Haldrup: would you?
